5 ways to decorate/organize on a budget

31 days collage

As a new mom, I’m always seeking frugal ways to make my house more of a home. I focus on using items you already own to organize or spruce up a living space.

1. Look around you.

There are many items you already own that you can use in different ways to organize or decorate your home. Have an extra garden hose to make a wreath? Want something creative to do with bottle caps? Wine corks?

2. Check out thrift stores/dollar stores.

Thrift stores or Dollar stores usually have a lot of items that, with a little bit of sprucing up can be just perfect for that little empty space in your home you’ve been wanting to fill! Use an old tie rack, shower curtain hooks, or antique

4 Weeks to a More Organized Home: Cleaning out the Fridge

4-weeks-to-organized-home-sidebar1121

I’m joining in MoneySavingMom‘s 4 Weeks to a More Organized Home, even though I’m a couple days late.

Every weekday morning from November 5 to December 7 (skipping the week of Thanksgiving), Crystal will post the day’s assignment and then every evening she will share her progress and host a link-up for you to share your progress and pictures, too.

I love that this accountability will keep me doing something little everyday to keep the house organized. Most of her organizing assignments will only take 20 minutes or less! For example, here was the assignment for Day 3:

Day 2: Cleaning List

cleaning daily & weekly tasks

Welcome back to 31 Days to Building a Cleaning Routine! On Monday I listed out some of the processes I’ll be blogging about this month. I also talked about how to figure out what margin time you have available to start your cleaning routine.

**Please join my weekly linky party: Take it on Tuesday!

Day 2 task: Create a Cleaning List

In order to create my cleaning list, I spent some time googling cleaning checklists and thinking about my particular situation. I live in a townhome with 3 levels and mostly wood floors.

Step 1: Brainstorm

Sit down with a clean piece of paper and just write and write the things you want to clean until you can’t come up with anything else. Then google and see if there is anything else to add to the list.

Step 2:

Day 1: Schedule time!

31 Days to building a cleaning routine button

Once again, I’m taking on the challenge by The Nester to blog for 31 Days on one topic. Last year I blogged about 31 Days of New Uses for Old Things.

This year it’s 31 Days to Building a Cleaning Routine. I REALLY need a cleaning routine. I started working on building one for the month of September so I can start sharing my experiences for October.

I will be taking you through my process of:

- how I came up with a routine & what it is

- how I made it work by streamlining by cleaning routine

- how I stuck with it

- greening my home cleaners

- narrowing down what cleaners to use and recipes for homemade cleaners I’ve used

Day 1 task: Write out a Schedule

Some of you may know your schedule pretty well, some

Menu Planning Monday: Organizing recipes & Whole Wheat Bread recipe

whole-wheat-bread

So, I’m been doing a lot of menu planning prep work lately. I have a spread sheet I’m working on that lists prices for the food I buy, and then on another tab I’m using that information to calculate the cost of the recipes I use on a regular basis. This takes a LOT of time. I’ve spent MONTHS slowly working on it.

Anyway, my goal is for this week to have enough recipes organized to plan meals for the month of August and know about how much I’m going to be spending for most meals! I’ll probably be posting my menu plan for the month on Thursday (or Friday)!!

Until then, we’ll likely be eating our leftovers and coming up with creative meals using what ingredients we have.

Dinners:

Bean & Cheese Freezer Burritos Spaghetti

Take it on Tuesday blog hop #39: Organizing Spices

spice drawer

Hello everyone! Awhile ago, I revealed our kitchen remodel and pantry organization. I had intended to label and organize my spices that same month. Four months later… I finally did it!!

It’s so nice to have the continuing accountability of sharing something I’ve “taken on” each Tuesday. It motivates me to get something done on my never ending to do list.

Please join me in Taking something on and link up each Tuesday!

Spice Drawer Organization

Before I made the switch from keeping the spices in the cabinet to drawer, I tried to keep them organized but it was hard to know what was on hand. I don’t have a picture to show you, but I basically had rows of spices.

I couldn’t tell what I had unless I took spices out of the cabinet, or just moved them aside. I didn’t like the

organized shoes!

I hope you didn’t miss out on last week’s amazing TIOT post by my husband. He explained our new cell phone plan that cut our phone bill in half!! He has responded to some of your comments and questions now.

This week’s Take it on Tuesday was organizing our coat closet. I wanted to show you the progress we made. It’s so nice to have the continuing accountability of sharing something I’ve “taken on” each Tuesday. It’s given me even more motivation me to work!

Coat Closet Organization

The “before” is really messy. My husband and I were tired of our shoes just being thrown into the closet. We wanted to be able to fit multiple shoes in the closet without the mess.

Here is the overall view of the closet:
