Day 17: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I found this great homemade dishwasher detergent recipe from Young House Love. I had most of the ingredients on hand anyway (since I had bought Borax for making my own Laundry Detergent).

You will need:

  • 2 c. borax
  • 2 c. baking soda
  • 4 little packages of unsweetened lemon Kool-Aid (or generic)

Mix together and store. You can substitute ½ c. of citric acid for the Kool-Aid but it’s harder to find.

Doesn’t look too interesting when mixed together:

The results?

Well, I wasn’t too impressed. Some dishes came out sparkling and others didn’t. I’ve not been to happy with recent results in my dishwasher anyway, so I’m thinking I need to cycle some vinegar through my dishwasher  to clean it up. Also, it might have been placement of some dishes. I don’t know.

So, I’m going to clean my dishwasher out, then try another load and let you know how it goes!!

What have you used for dishwasher detergent?
