Menu Plan Monday & Once a Month Shopping Cost Breakdown

We did it!!

For the month of May we took on a “once a month grocery shopping budget plan”. Here’s what it looked like:

First week: Spent $121.22 ($30 at CostCo and the rest at Checkers/Aldi)

Second week: Spent just under $25 (bought mostly produce)

Third week: Spent $22 (bought mostly produce)

Fourth week (+ the 4 last days of May) : Spent $31.44

What we spend our money on:

Week one: April 30th – May 6th

CostCo trip

  • $6.75 for 25 pounds flour
  • $4.35 for 32 ounces Cheddar Cheese
  • $1.99 for gallon of skim milk
  • $13.50 for Perrier (my husband is now drinking Perrier instead of Pepsi!)
  • $1.19 for dozen eggs (I took a friend to CostCo and we split 3 dozen eggs)
  • $1.08 for 5 Aluminum pans (again, my friend took most of the package)

Total (with tax) = $29.25

Produce:

  • 3 pounds strawberries
  • 3 pounds Gala apples
  • 2 bags Spinach
  • 4 pounds oranges
  • 10 pounds potatoes
  • 3 pounds of yellow onions
  • fresh Basil
  • 12 ounces of blackberries
  • Broccoli
  • 3 pounds green beans
  • 2 bell peppers
  • 1 pound red onions
  • $.99 for tomatoes (clearance)
  • 2 pints grape tomatoes
  • 1 pound roma tomatoes
  • 7.7 pounds of Bananas
Total (with tax) = $29.94

 

Dairy/Bakery:
Total (with tax) = $20.17

 

Canned:
  • 2 cans diced tomatoes
  • 2 cans pitted olives
  • Basil, Oregano, & Parsley Flakes (1.125 oz each)
  • 2 cans Black beans
  • 3 jars (24 oz. each) of Salsa

Total (with tax) = $12.81

 

Misc:

  • $2.38 for 2 bags Tortilla chips
  • $3.99 for gallon of orange juice
  • $1.49 for 2 pounds brown sugar
  • $2.49 for
  • $1.50 for Chocolate Chips
  • $2.99 for Toasted Oats Cereal (32 oz.)
  • $3.29 for 1 pound deli ham
  • $2.60 for Vanilla Extract
  • $1 for 5 packages of Ramen Noodles
  • $1.68 for whole wheat Penne
  • $1.10 for
  • $1.88 for Pepperoni Link (which we will cut for a pizza)
  • 2 containers of Peanut Butter

Total (with tax) = $29.05

Total cost for first week = $121.22

Butternut Squash & Parsnip Baked Pasta
- Stir-fry
Bacon, Tomato & Arugula Pizza
- Eggs & Bacon Pitas
- leftover Braised Chicken Gumbo

 

Week two: May 7th – 13th

I can’t find my receipts for this week, but I just bought the produce for meals of the week and spent just under $25.

Tortilla Meatball Soup
Greek Pizza
- Spinach Salad
- Graduation party cook-out
- leftovers

 

Week three: May 14th – 20th

This week, we had some leftovers and again, I just had to buy produce for out planned meals. I spent about $22.

- Spaghetti
- leftover Pizza
- Spinach Salad
-  Pepperoni, Onion, & Olive Pizza
- Chicken Curry

Week four: May 21st – 31st

Produce:

- Zucchini
- Fresh Basil
- Mushrooms
- Raspberries
- 2 Green Bell Peppers
- 2 Red Onions
- 1 pound Organic Strawberries
- 1 pound Strawberries
- Watermelon
- 5 pounds Bananas

Total (with tax) = $20.90

 

Dairy:

- Ricotta Cheese
- Mozzarella Cheese

Total (with tax) = $5.38

 

Misc:

- Vegetable Oil
- Cooking Spray
- Tomato Sauce

Total (with tax) = $5.16

Total cost for first week = $31.44

- leftover Pepperoni, Onion, & Olive Pizza
- Stir-fry
- dinner @ parents
Roasted Veggie & Ricotta Pizza
- Taco Salad

 

For the month of June, I will continue the “once a month menu planning”. I will also be working on calculating the cost of every meal we make, so that in future months I can be even better prepared at planning!!

10 Goals for this Week

I’ve decided to break down all my goals for 2012  and May’s goals into manageable bite size weekly goals. Each Monday I will plan on blogging about my 10 Weekly Goals – how I did and giving my new goals for the week. Here are my goals for last week:

 

Wife/Family Goals

1. Write a love note to Matt

2. Call my sisters & mom – hang out with Amy! – Well, I’m actually hanging out with her tomorrow!

 

Home Management Goals

3. Declutter project - declutter and organize hall closet

4. Calculate the cost for the meals I made last week – This will be a goal of mine next month!

 

Personal Goals

5. Couch 2 5K – Week 9 & run a 5K!! – YES!! My husband and I completed the 5K together!

6. Read 7-10 chapters of the Old Testament (or at least 3 times this week)

7. 31 Days of No Complaining

8. Try out a sewing project on my machine – No, I may have to put that on my goals list for next month to accomplish.

 

Blogging/Business Goals

9. Set up a “recipes” section to my blog – I’m working on that this week!!

10. Figure out how to install a child theme for my blog
